Manta rays
One of the defining marine encounters of the Inhambane coast, with nearby dive sites offering opportunities through the year.
Five bedrooms, a private pool and direct beach access — set into the dunes on one of Mozambique's most remarkable stretches of coast.
The Lookout is a private five-bedroom beach house on Praia da Rocha's south beach. It is generous rather than grand: thatch, timber, wide-open living spaces, a pool above the dunes and the Indian Ocean almost everywhere you look.
The living room, dining area and kitchen open directly onto the timber deck. Three generous en-suite bedrooms suit couples; a bunk-and-twin room is made for children; and a smaller fifth double room gives an additional guest some privacy.

The pool sits at the centre of outdoor life, facing the dunes and ocean.
Housekeeping is included each day, keeping the house easy to live in.
Steps from the deck lead down through the dune toward the south beach.
A full kitchen for long lunches, fresh catch and easy family meals.
If you would rather not cook, a chef can be arranged in advance.
Then breakfast. Then perhaps nothing at all. The house works best when the timetable disappears.
The Lookout is not designed around an itinerary. Surfboards collect on the deck, the pool becomes the meeting point, somebody finds dinner, and the day usually ends outside.

Praia da Rocha's south beach fronts a marine reserve. Manta rays can be encountered through the year, whale sharks are most associated locally with October through March, and the winter months bring the humpback migration along the Inhambane coast.

The warmer months are regarded locally as the peak period for encounters with the world's largest fish.
Winter brings the migration, with spectacular offshore activity often visible along the coast.
Walk down from the house, swim in the bay, surf when conditions suit, or simply stay on the sand.
The Lookout sits on Praia da Rocha Beach Estate near Inhambane. The final approach is on sand and a 4x4 is required. The last few kilometres are part of the point: the road gets smaller, the noise falls away, and the coast starts to feel genuinely remote.
Rates are per night for private use of the house. Peak periods have a seven-night minimum; at other times the minimum stay is three nights.
